Viola-Matic commercial

Author: andrew

I’ve written on here a few times about the value of innovation and doing something a bit different than everyone else to make yourself stand out. I’ve just come across the Viola-Matic commercial on youtube and it seems that some people have taken things a bit too far!

If you go to my viola sheet music search page you’ll find a bunch of instructions and tutorials on how to use a viola (including quite a few Suzuki viola sheet music books for beginners), but none of them include microwaves, ice-cream scooping, potato mashing, or dishwashers. Not only has this video had 55,000 views, it has also come to the attention of Luis and Clark who made the carbon-fiber viola, who loved it so much that they’ve embedded the video in their website.

I don’t think this video would have been quite so popular if violas weren’t already the butt of so many musical jokes – but the creator has brilliantly tapped into that prejudice, and made something that’s both shocking and funny.

Of course, making a viral video is one thing, but figuring out how to use this to promote yourself is another. This video has turned out to be a great marketing tool for the viola manufacturers, but nothing more than a bit of fun for the violist who created the video in the first place.
